WEEK 11 : Technical flats exercise

Technical flats need to be drawn with clarity and accuracy as one minor error could affect the whole manufacturing of the garment. Eventually the designer will suffer a great loss. This week, students were exercised on drawing technical flats of a lady jacket, a skirt, a dress, a blouse and a pant. A template was given to everyone and we had to draw the front and back view of a garment along with the stylized drawing. Our drawings were then reviewed by the lecturer.

[Fig.1] I have designed a work uniform to be simple, feminine and classy. The drawing above depicts a jacket of a stewardess. It is a well-fit jacket that stops at the hips. This jacket features a double-breasted front and a lapel. The front has a small inverted-v opening that begins from the waist that reveals the rest of the skirt. The sleeves are of three-quarter length and it features a folded cuff with a button on each cuffs.

[Fig.2] This is an above-knee dress with an hourglass silhouette. This dress features a modern touch of the gathers at the front that is shaped like an arch. It has a funnel collar, long sleeves with hidden zipper at the back, overall presenting a minimalist look. I think to design a collection with a minimalist aesthetic would be rather challenging as a designer could end up with an uninteresting and an ordinary collection. This suggests that a designer needs to be creative with the garment, for instance, playing with the form and structure or applying techniques of fabric manipulation.

[Fig.3] This drawing shows a blouse with a tent silhouette that hangs from the shoulders and ends at the hips This blouse has a feminine look due to the flounced collar and cuffs. The cuffs are long, covering the model's hands. It also have keyhole details at the cuffs which adds as an interesting factor. The buttons are invisible as it is lapped. This blouse is also suitable for a work wear item as it is not too bold but still stylish.

[Fig.4] I am fond of this design the most out of all as I found the details on this pants exceptional. This is a three-quarter pants that has another layer of fabric sewn onto the front, giving an illusion of a wrap pants. It also features pockets on each side of the pants. I wanted the overall look of masculinity hence I have drawn the cropped top with a broad padded shoulders.
